  <title>Crimson Sails - Starter Ship</title>

Two things I've always had a passion for are online communities and gaming (usually manifesting themselves as one thing for me - MUD and Talker coding is where I got started). So, naturally, I've always wanted to build online games. Unfortunately, most Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games require Massively Staffed Companies of coders, designers, network engineers and so on (not to mention millions of dollars of funding). And, when it's an externally funded investment, building one of these becomes a 'job'; the creativity takes a back seat to the profitability. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for making a profit, I just don't think creativity should suffer for it. Lucky for me there are technologies that would allow someone to build an online game with minimal staff (ie. me, for now). So... I've started a new project called 'Crimson Sails'. Using Flash for the client and building (horribly I'm sure) a server from scratch with C, I'm hoping to create an online game of a 'Fantasy Pirates' genre (no Elves or anything, just an imaginary world, which allows me to avoid historical research and gives me freedom in the story line). I'll be creating a web site for this soon but thought I would post some early renders here. I'm using Blender for the modeling and I can't say enough good things about it. Open Source, powerful 3D modeling and animation suite with a revolutionary interface (seriously) and a brilliant community (they have a huge manual online via WikiBooks.org and tons of online tutorials).

Anyway, the style of Crimson Sails is 'cell-shaded cartoony' because, well... that's the extent of my digital creative abilities right now ;) This image is a 315-degree render of one of the starter ships. Not sure if I'm going to use contemporary ship names (sloop, fluyt, barque, etc) or something entirely made-up.
